My husband loves burgers. It’s a never-ending thing that drives me nuts: we go to a new restaurant and I’m so excited to try whatever specialty they have or something creative and exciting. John, gets the burger. He has tried an innumerable number of restaurants and has found some of his favorites (if you live in King County, WA try the Tipsy Cow Burger Bar in Redmond- fantastic burgers with a big variety and close to 30 beers on tap).
About two years ago my husband took me to Dahlia Lounge (http://tomdouglas.com/index.php?page=dahlia-lounge) for the first time. Dahlia Lounge is one of many restaurants owned by Seattle area celebrity chef Tom Douglas. The first time we saw the place was actually when we were attempting to go to another one of TD’s restaurants, Serious Pie. John loves pizza, so I tried taking him there as a surprise. Unfortunately they don’t take reservations and when we got there, there was a three hour wait. So when trying to figure out a plan B, we passed Dahlia Lounge. Now, the wait there was even longer, but it made its way to our list of places to try.
Growing up I had a best friend, Ashleigh. She and I knew each other from the time we were babies. Our parents were friends before we were born. In fact, our dads were in each others weddings. When her parents got divorced and her mom moved Ashleigh and her sister to Eastern Washington, my younger sister and I spent a couple weeks visiting them each summer. Those were some of the best weeks of my childhood. We got to go all over town, see the illustrious boys of Yakima, stay up late, and just do what young girls do (including but not limited to: dressing up in ridiculous outfits and pretending to be movie stars, making up dances to to N’Sync and Britney Spears songs- which by the way, were pretty cool then, dreaming about the boys that we would meet who would sweep us off our feet, and eating popcorn and candy among other not-so-great for you foods all hours of the night).
Sad to say, the beautiful fresh corn season is almost over. So that means, time to take advantage of what’s left!! Although my husband and I generally don’t eat corn very often, I am far more likely to eat it during the summer. It has such a wonderful sweet, crisp, summery flavor it just begs to be eaten outside while basking in the sun and enjoying some fresh ice tea.
I love to grill. I grill all year round (thanks mom!), but I especially like to grill in the summer. Step outside and enjoy the fresh air, sunshine (although this summer in the Seattle area there hasn’t been much), and a nice glass of wine or of course, a beer! I have always done your traditional grilled fare- chicken, burgers, steaks, etc. But recently I have been trying new things that you wouldn’t typically see on your everyday grill. I’ve also been trying to eat more vegetarian meals, but having steamed or roasted veggies gets old very quickly, so it was time for me to get a bit more creative with how I enjoy those summer vegetables, and viola! The birth of this yummy summer veggie pizza!
